Scoliosis is defined as a lateral (side-to-side) curvature of the spine, and is diagnosed as “scoliosis” when it is greater than 10 degrees. Initially, scoliosis may occur only in the coronal plane, but more severe degrees of scoliosis involve both the transverse plane, with spinal rotation to the opposite side as the lateral curve becomes more pronounced, and the sagittal plane, with forward flexion.

After this workshop, you will be able to…

• Understand the terms medical professionals use when defining scoliosis

• Understand the way scoliosis is described by medical professionals

• Understand the classifications of scoliosis • Understand the questions to ask your client who have scoliosis

• Determine which muscles to strengthen and which to release in various cases of scoliosis

• Develop exercise programs for all clients with muscular imbalances from scoliosis

• Learn about “sensory motor amnesia” to understand why some muscles are inhibited in both long and short positions

• Learn the “Adam Forward Bend” test for use when your client does not know whether or not their scoliosis is structural or functional
