5 Tips to Boost Your Quality of Life and be Consistent in your Practice



Have you ever just woken up and felt bleh? If you're human, you have. Let's face it, we'd all LOVE to be blissful and happy all day every day and just wake-up shooting sunshine out of you know where. Unfortunately, we are more complex than that. Having an "off" day is just something that we all go through. What if there was a way to change that? I am here to tell you that you can. By starting your day off with and continuing to fill your day with positive thoughts, you can change the entire course of your day.

What happens when we think positively? Our bodies react to daily stress better and are more able to cope with all of the things life throws at us. Am I right? I myself struggle on a daily basis, but have found solace and success with this simple technique.

Changing your mindset is only one piece of the puzzle. Getting your workout in is hard enough, let alone on those days that you feel "bleh". Your mindset really does play a huge role in your overall well being. Here are my five go to tips for changing my mindset and having a positive day every day.

Tip #1: Start with one positive thought every morning.

Before you even get out of bed, even if you wake up feeling energized and ready to take on the world, find one thing that you are excited about. It can be that the sun is shining, you are excited to make breakfast, the meeting that you've been prepping for for months is finally happening and it's going to be amazeballs! Whatever it is, think it, say it, write it down. I have a dry erase marker in my bathroom and write it on my mirror every morning. This way it is in front of me while I am getting ready. Repeat it to yourself all day.

Tip #2: Start your day off with a few deep breaths.

Breathing is an essential part of life. If you haven't noticed, when we are stressed, we naturally hold our breath. Become conscious and aware of your breathing patterns. Before you get out of bed, take a moment to simply focus on breathing in deep and and exhaling deeply. Start to notice what happens in the body to relieve stress. Practice this through the day as you repeat your one positive thought.

Tip #3: Make a plan to move your body every day.

We need to move our bodies as a part of a healthy lifestyle. Do you sit all day for work? Have you noticed how stiff you feel at the end of every day? GET MOVING! If you feel stiff and gross and your mindset is bleh, wouldn't you want to change it? When our bodies are in motion, endorphins are released and help us to energize and feel lighter in both our mind and body. I don't know about you, but when I am having the cruddiest day on the planet and I want to just crawl under the covers and hide, this is the time that I know I need to get moving. Just 5 minutes of taking a walk or a jog or anything that makes me happy and gets me grooving is well worth the effort.

Tip #4: Smile!

Did you know that when you smile it actually tricks your brain? When I was training for my first Half IRONMAN one of my coaching told me this little tip on the bike. I hated the bike portion. I was miserable. I humored him and behold...success! In just a few short minutes, I found the joy in it. I forget where and who (I need to look it up again), but apparently, there have been studies done about the chemicals that are released in your brain when you smile. It works. Try it!

Tip #5: Be kind to yourself.

How often are you engaging in negative self talk? We are all guilty of it and are our own worst enemies. If we say it to ourselves and others hear it, they in turn are prone to adopt a few of their own thoughts about us. True? I think so. As a society, we are all too quick to judge ourselves. Often it comes from being insecure about something. Start by adding one thing you like about yourself or are good at every day. Think it, write it down and say it. Add it to your positive thought each morning and you will be amazed how your confidence grows.

Each of these simple tips can be done in 5 minutes before you get out of bed each day. Looping in a friend to do this with you will increase your success. So, find a buddy, make a new friend at a fitness, Pilates or Yoga class you take.

The last step in this is sharing. By sharing your success, you will inspire others to enjoy a happier and less stressful existence and a healthier mind and body.
